5 Things To Do in Schenectady

Whether you are a new resident or are considering Solara Luxury Apartments, there’s a good chance you might be new to the Schenectady area. Maybe you’re moving here for a new job or perhaps your significant other lives in the area. Whatever the reason is, you’ve probably wondered to yourself, “What is there to do for fun in the Capital District of New York?”

Lying on the banks of the beautiful Mohawk River, Schenectady used to be known as “the city that lights and hauls the world,” as it was once home to General Electric and the American Locomotive Company. It is only 15 miles away from the New York state capital, Albany, and is home to Union College, which is one of the oldest college campuses in the United States. It is surrounded by the scenic forests of upstate New York, including the Plotter Kill Nature Preserve, which features over 600 acres of hiking trails and waterfalls. Solara Luxury Apartments also has easy access to hiking and biking trails at Great Flats Nature Trail. Enjoy peaceful and beautiful scenery with the entrance located off of W. Campbell Road!

Even though Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty are the first things that come to many people’s minds when they hear the words ‘New York,’ we’re going to highlight five fun attractions that prove just how much the Capital District has to offer:

1. The Museum of Innovation and Science:

Founded in 1934, the Museum of Innovation of Science is great for families and is conveniently located in downtown Schenectady. It features a planetarium, an indoor butterfly house, and plenty of traveling exhibits that rotate frequently. The museum also offers science camps for children during summer and winter school breaks!

2. Schenectady Greenmarket:

Every Sunday, over 60 vendors convene to sell artisan goods, local produce, prepared food, and more. Enjoy live music and support local businesses at this must-see market! In winter months (Nov-April), the market is held inside Proctor’s. The rest of the year it is held around city hall.

3. Rivers Casino and Resort:

For those looking to leave the kids at home, head to the Rivers Casino and Resort. Not only can one play poker, slots, and a variety of table games, but there are also six different restaurants to dine in! The Rivers Casino is located at the old American Locomotive Company headquarters on the Mohawk River and is a must-visit location for anyone in the Schenectady area.

4. The Proctor’s Theater:

Built in 1926, the Proctor theater is a time capsule from the age of silent movies and vaudeville. It contains three theaters along with, “Goldie,” a functioning Wurlitzer pipe organ. The theater doesn’t just show films but also showcases music, stand-up comedy, and theater.

5. The Stockade Historic District:

In 1962, this neighborhood in the northwest corner of Schenectady became the first historic district in New York state. It is the oldest part of the city, having been inhabited since the 17th century. Architecture buffs will be amazed by the colonial homes, many of which are 100-200 years old.
